Please follow these guidelines when preparing a motor claim
- Do not move the vehicle unless it is causing a serious obstruction in which case its’ position should be marked.
- Make a sketch of the scene of the accident.
- Advise your driver not to make any statements acknowledge or soliciting responsibility for the accident.
- Obtain the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the other parties, in particular witnesses.
- Obtain/Note the registration numbers of the other vehicle(s) involved as well as details of ownership and the insurance coverages.
- Report the accident to the Police within twenty-four (24) hours and produce your Driver’s License and the vehicle’s Insurance Certificate. The name of the officer to whom the accident is reported should be also noted.
- Refer all Third Parties to your Insurer.
- Complete a claim form and forward to CIC as soon as possible.
In addition to the above, where Comprehensive cover applies:
- Obtain a written estimate for repairs, but do not repair until the Insurer/Loss Adjuster consents, and send to CIC.
- Some Insurers are prepared to have minor damage viewed by staff from their own office. If the vehicle can be driven take it to them with your repair estimate.
- Once the Insurer consents, repairs can be undertaken. Kindly note that there is a policy excess on every claim.
Please note that where Third Party coverage applies:
- It is imperative that no statement or admission of liability is made. All queries by the other party are to be referred to your Insurer.
While private vehicles are insured for accidental damage, the policy will not respond when the estimate for repairs falls within the policy excess. In such a case or if the vehicle is not insured for accidental own damage, the following actions should be taken if a third party vehicle is responsible for the accident:
- Obtain a certified copy of ownership for third party vehicle from the Licensing Authority if the owner or insurer is not known
- Obtain an estimate of the cost or repairs for the damage to your vehicle.
- Contact an independent adjuster to do a survey of the damage vehicle.
- Submit your claim to the third party insurer with supporting documents i.e. adjuster’s report, estimates or bills for repairs, medical expenses, wrecking fees, adjuster’s fees, loss of use or cost of rental of comparative alternative transport.
- Repair in accordance with the adjuster’s recommendations once the third party insurer has viewed the vehicle.
